Akaso V50 Elite action camera is one of the best choices if you intend to capture fast-moving action. Apart from capturing smooth videos, the videos and images are strikingly alive and stable.  It is so because you can film at 4K video at 60fps and capture shoots at 20MP.

The touch screen allows you to access and control your camera easily. And, you can use the tripod mount without the case. What’s more, you can use your voice to tell your camera to perform some tasks. For instance, you can ask it to take shots.

The look and the feel of the camera are impressive. Specifically, it is soft to touch, with interruptions of the ins and outs, for a better grip. The 1/4-inch tripod thread makes this camera ideal as both an occasional and an action camera. Count the Akaso V50 Elite as a lightweight action camera, only weighing 544 grams.

The countless places to mount this camera (helmets, bikes, etc.) make it easy to use. Though the LCD is unusually sharp, we could wish it was larger.

You get an SD, micro USB slot for charging, and an HDMI port to output the footage directly to a TV.

There is no doubt it is one of the best action cameras under 200 dollars you can find today!

GoPro Hero 7 Silver offers remarkable video quality and photos for its size and price. In addition, the camera is lightweight and easy to operate. Such features make Hero 7 a friendly camera, especially for beginners.

This great action camera packs a dynamic range of features. Notable professional features are 4K resolution, more megapixels, and an external mic, among others.

The regular shape and hard plastic is an indication that it was built for mounting. Actually, the camera can attach to anything that has the right adapter, thanks to the adhesive pads and mount house.

The GoPro Hero 7 Silver is water-resistant up to 10 meters. You don’t need an extra casing for your snorkeling activity. However, if you want to get deeper, the super suitcase withstands water pressure up to 60 meters deep.

One limitation of the camera is it lacks a front screen. While operating, the LED light on the front side blinks. The primary choice is 4K (at 4:3 aspect) or 1080p, photo, video, or time-lapse unless you dig into the settings.

Ideally, the non-removable battery lasts up to 2 hours for straight-shooting. However, if you take short clips, the battery won’t last that long.

Choosing Your Action Camera

About 4K Video and Frame Rate

4K video refers to a video that is approximately 4000 pixels wide. In consumer electronics, it is often called 4K UHD (Ultra High Definition) and it has a resolution of 3840 x 2160 px. The cinema industry uses a larger 4K format of 4096 x 2160 px.

At the price range we are talking about here on this page, the cameras are able to record native 4K video (meaning the video produced by the camera directly has a 4K resolution), unlike some action cameras under $100.

Now about frame rate.

Video is made of still images. The human eye is able to view 10 or 12 images per second as separate images. But if you increase this number, if you squeeze more images into one second, it will produce an motion effect: that’s video. These images are what we call frames. The more frames per second (noted “fps”), the smoother the video.

Lower priced action cameras are often capped at a frame rate of 30 fps. If you can afford spending up to $200, you can find action cameras able to shoot 4K 60 fps video.

Not only the video quality is higher, but if you want to play with slow motion, it is also interesting to have as many as 60 frames per second for the video to remain smooth.

What To Look At When Choosing Your Camera?

Photo Resolution

Even though an action camera’s primary goal is to shoot video, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use it as a camera for photography as well! Think of yourself snorkeling among colorful corals. Wouldn’t you like to snap some good shots on top of a cool video? Nowadays, it is not unreasonable to expect a 20 MP photo resolution from an action camera.

Lens

Action cameras are famous to have very wide angle lenses. Some cameras are equiped with an adjustable shooting angle, which is a pretty cool feature. Another – maybe more important – thing you need to pay attention to is the distortion. Very wide fisheye lenses result in very strong distortions and you need to make sure that your camera has a distortion correction system.

Diving Depth

Many people buy an action camera to practice a water sport, go snorkeling or play in waterfalls, and will never use the full potential of the waterproof case that comes with the camera.

However, if you are into scuba diving, pay attention to have a case that is waterproof to at least 40 m (131 ft). Some models like the ThiEYE T5 Pro can dive up to 60 m (197 ft).

External Mic Support

If sound is important in your video projects, an external mic support is something you should consider and always good to have. Nothing is more frustrating to have a beautiful 4K video… with a really bad sound. That said, technology is improving and sound is now usually decent in most good quality cameras like the ones on this page.

Battery Life

It is difficult to say how much batteries will really last. Of course, the higher the resolution and frame rate you are using, the faster you will drain your battery. Other factors can come into play, for example it is a known fact that cold also drains batteries. In any case, it seems standard that a battery should last 60 to 90 mins.

Also make sure that 2 batteries are included in the package, as it is more and more becoming the norm as well.

Stabilization

All the cameras on this page have some sort of image stabilization system, but they are not all equally effective. For example, stabilization built in the GoPro Hero 7 Silver is quite basic, while others like the Akaso V50 Elite or the Campark X30 have an advanced Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) – often coupled with a 6-axis gyroscope that is able to detect position and motion in all directions.

How to Choose The Memory Card for Your Action Camera?

The type of memory card you need for your action camera is a Micro SD card.

At under $200, you already have access to very high performance, such as 4K 60 fps video. The downside of this is that it creates really large files! Can you imagine, every second, 60 frames have to be saved on the memory card. For that reason, it is crucial that you choose a fast card.

So besides the storage capacity, what you will need to look at is the speed class of your SD card. If you want to read all about speed classes, you can take a look at this page. I am going here to focus on what you need to know to choose a suitable card for your action camera.

Micro SD CardsOn the left, I am showing two my own micro SD cards. You can see that the one at the top is a Micro SDHC card, and the one at the bottom is a micro SDXC card. I won’t get into a whole comparison here but just know that SDXC cards are more recent and have higher performances.

Now about speed classes themselves, they express how fast the card is writing and storing data. They can be expressed in 3 different ways.

  • The general speed class is a number inside a circle, like the 10 on the card at the top. Class 10 cards are really a minimum when it comes to recording 4K video.
  • The UHS speed class is a number inside a U, like the 3 on the bottom card. U3 is a good speed class to choose for high performance cameras like 4K 60 fps.
  • The video speed class is displayed as a V followed by a number, like the V30 on the bottom card.
  • Speed classes can express the same thing and can be equivalent. Thus, Class 10 = U1 = V10, and U3 = V30. These cards can write 10 MB and 30 MB of data per second, respectively.

For your 4K action camera, I strongly recommend not choosing a card below Class 10 / U1, and ideally a U3 card.

How Did You Choose Your Top Pick?

The top pick is never easy to select, given all the amazing cameras that are available these days. We chose to present 6 great cameras on this page for you to compare and make your own opinion about them, but the top pick is the camera we believe has an ideal mix of good performance and good price.

Final Thoughts

There you have it! This was my 2020 selection of the best action cameras under 200 dollars. No camera is perfect but for this price range, you can already find some gems! I did my very best to help you get the best bang for your buck and detail what’s great about these cameras but also what they lack.

In any case, I hope this guide was valuable to you and helped you choose you action camera with confidence.
